In England, Combined Science involves studying all 3 sciences Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is worth 2 GCSEs. The main advantage is that it frees up space in the timetable for students to choose a different subject, which is becoming more important now that many schools are limiting pupils to a smaller number of GCSEs (typically 8-10). It is possible to progress onto A level Science subjects with Combined science, but you may need slightly higher grades to obtain a place. For GCSE, the number of exams is the same as the separate Sciences (2 exams for each subject), but they are slightly shorter (1 hour 10 mins) because there is less content. Contrary to popular belief, Combined Science is not easier than taking 3 separate Sciences, the course is designed to be equally difficult, but with less content in some topics. Combined Science is available in 2 tiers Higher (grades 9-4) and Foundation (grades 5-1) and the same tier exams must be taken in all subjects.
